It’s making fun of the face that in Christmas letters people exaggerate and make everything that happened that year sound good when writing to their families. Ted lost his job so Sally is phrasing it “Ted started a new chapter…” and Ted’s making fun of her for it.

Yeah but “started a new chapter” is at least a valid euphemism. What does X-ray vision have to do with depression?

It doesn’t have anything to do with depression. It’s a ridiculous and blatant lie. Ted is mocking her for making things up.

Well, then again, considering that he’s working at Shortpacked, X-Ray vision may not be so implausible….
