Texting Drivers, Swimming with Suspects, and Jurors in Love

  • July 16 Crimeweek

    1. I think Amy Jacobsen was fired for being a woman. A sexy, sexy, woman. Seriously. Yours is the first description of the story that I’ve seen that didn’t say (let alone focus on) that she was wearing a swimsuit. Of course, I can deduce that she wore a swimsuit from the fact that you tell me she went swimming, but the other stories focus on the swimsuit, not the swimming. Which makes me think that the fuss is really over the suspicion that her sexy, sexy, sexiness might be unprofessional. A male reporter wearing swimming trunks wouldn’t have been nearly this big a story.

    2. Of course, to be fair, I did include a photo that showed her wearing a bathing suit top and a towel wrapped around her waist.

    3. I have a feeling a male reporter in a bathing suit having a pool party with Craig Stebic would turn some heads as well (and not in a good way)

    4. Regarding drivers text-messaging, there’s a bill in front of the New York legislature currently. I actually heard it debated this morning on the radio. The conservatives argued that the law would be unenforceable and that they don’t need government restricting their freedoms in a futile attempt to guarantee safety.

The other participants didn’t do much to make the obvious counterarguments, but this wasn’t exactly a formal debate anyway.

    5. I, dunno, S.P. Charles. The T.V. headlines I saw were “Reporter videotaped doing interview in bikini,” and things like that. That’s a good titillating grabber, that you just don’t get with just swimming trunks. With a male reporter probably the story would been “Interview at pool party,” or “Improper contacts?,” which might not have had the zing to be a big news story.

    6. What I meant, Autumn, was that the sight of the two men frolicking in the pool (and the photo they released of Craig was not pretty) would trigger a whole different brand of speculation.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that…
