I wouldn’t be surprised if I have to Arlo-Page this one once the responses start coming in.

  1. I guess the key here is that he never actually says “so WE joined a swingers club”. Apparently he joined by himself – seemingly at her suggestion.

  2. I think the phrase “swingers club” is pretty much a dead giveaway that it belongs on the Arlo page.

I had the same interpretation as Brian. I laughed when I read it – I think it works.

  3. He swings, she goes to the book club, everybody’s happy. But you have to wonder about his swingers club, if it’s composed mainly of guys who go to meetings without their girlfriends.

  4. I suspect her “book club” is actually someone on the side (or another swingers’ club).

  5. I thought the same thing as Dave. That also implies that she’s been in her club for quite some time now.

  7. The truly sad thing about this is that he’s talking about his “girlfriend,” not “wife.” I thought it was only within marriage that sex became a deadening chore for women… I thought only married women preferred sanctioning the infidelity of their partners to frequent sex with said partners. Have the comics led me astray all these years?

  8. It took me a couple of reads after reading the comments, but I think the joke is this:
The girlfriend recommended the swingers club, obviously for both of them, because apparently her needs were not being met – and the stereotypical male decides she must be thinking of only his needs and he goes by himself while she’s at the book club. And while the punchline at the expense of the self-centered male is slightly amusing it still isn’t that ‘funny’.
