  2. I figured there had to be a superstition that tied in. Oddly, my wife – who grew up on a Minnesota cattle farm – hadn’t heard of it.

  3. Well, sure. If there are ten cows in a field and eight are laying down, then that means an 80% chance of rain.

  4. It’s actually scientific, to an extent. The kinds of atmospheric conditions that herald rain tend to make flies stay closer to the ground, so in turn cows lie down to get away from the lower-flying flies.
