Bill Fishman: I think Sachel started the sentence and then got distracted thinking about all the things he could eat, and was staring off into the distance, and Rob looked where he was staring.
Susan Anderson: And the reason he isn’t finishing the sentence is that, regardless of how hungry he is or isn’t, he always eats “a horse” when he consumes his dog food.
Joe Blevins: Of course, the complete expression is “eat a horse,” but who wants to eat a horse? Incidentally, I’ve been telling this same joke for years (“I’m so hungry I could EAT!”), and it’s never gotten more than a weak chuckle. Sachel didn’t even get that.

For the last two months, I’ve always thought “Satchel” (Satchel Pooch after “Satchel” Paige) was looking at Bucky because that’s more in line with the turn in the strip this year where Satchel has begun to have enough of Bucky’s constant abuse.
However, I concede that that could possibly, if unlikely-ly, be the faraway stare that accompanies an array of choices passing through his mind.
Looking at Rob, I could go either way. I just really love the Bucky possibility. Go, Satchel!

I’m with Joe, except Satchel isn’t joking, he’s making a declarative statement. Does Satchel ever joke?

Satchel will eat anything. He is stumped trying to think up something that he would have to be really hungry to want to eat, as in “I’m so hungry I could eat at Arby’s” (Sherry or Terry from the Simpson’s).

Satchel is just making the simple observation that he is hungry, therefore he can eat. It’s only us more sophisticated folk that expect the phrase “I bet I could eat” to be fleshed out with an exaggeration, hence the perplexed look on Rob’s face.
