  1. I get it.

It might not be necessary to go all the way back 47 years: in the 80s there was an SNL sketch in which Eddie Murphy had himself made up to look white, and it included hilarious (staged, scripted) scenes in which bankers happily gave him sacks of money, cops tore up parking tickets, etc.

  2. When that SNL skit aired, I wonder what percent of the audience realized it was inspired by a book that was already a quarter of a century old — and in fact was written before Eddie Murphy was born.

  3. I agree. Way out of date. But I give him props for trying…

  4. I’m confused. I’m only 20, but I don’t think I know anyone who DOESN’T know Black Like Me and wouldn’t get the joke in this comic (and I’ve never heard of the SNL skit until now).

  5. It’s probably a hit-or-miss thing, J: My son is a college freshman and unusually well-read, yet he never happened to have heard of “Black Like Me”. Faulkner, Hemingway, Updike, yeah, but this one was under his radar.

  6. I’ve heard of the experiment but didn’t remember the name of the book and probably wouldn’t have made the connection.

  9. I’ve read the book, and it took me a minute to get the joke.

  10. Is “Bat Like Me” actually part of the cartoon? The .gif is missing, but from the SnapShots pop-up it looks like it isn’t. That would make this an obscure cartoon *without* a punchline.

  11. “Bat Like Me” is part of the comic

  12. It’s really just not funny, which happens when you’re a political cartoonist struggling to fit a dealine.
