But there seems to be a huge disconnect between the first three panels and the fourth, although I can understand that Hawthorne is using the current situation to get himself elected mayor, which, of course, he’ll turn into a moneymaking scheme. HOWEVER, I still don’t get the weekly elections–unless so many residents are being eaten that there’s a whole new population every week. And why did Fillmore assume plural elections for mayor? Sorry, I know I’m over analyzing…

He goes through any number of get rich quick schemes, each of which lasts about a week before he loses interest/alienates his clientèle/quits one step ahead of indictment. It’s entirely consistent with his character that he would have declared himself mayor of the lagoon following elections that he held on his own with himself the only candidate and only voter.

Incidently, he’s naked right now because he’s not wearing his beer can.

I suspect the crab called them of his own volition without telling anyone, making the polling place his own house, allowing him to be the only voter.
