  1. There seems to be an obvious explanation for this one: Arlo has cut the extension cord, surprising, but not electrocuting himself. Janis is already prepared with a replacement extension cord. From the blase look on her face, it’s clear that she was expecting such klutzy behavior from Arlo. I don’t see any obvious Arlo Page-worthy interpretation, although a Freudian psychoanalyst might disagree.

  2. The majority of the joke here seems to rest on his expectation that she will be worried about him, that she will be frantic, and that she will be perhaps even a little bit stereotypically feminine about this. However, speaking as a man who has hurt himself in front of women who cared about him before, they really aren’t all nurturing like that the seventh time; they learn, even if I don’t, apparently.

  3. I remember a neighbor doing this a few years ago (more like 15). Sadly, he died of brain cancer some time ago (completely unrelated to his hedge mishap), and we miss him. Much love, Stewart.

  4. In response to Steve’s comment, I don’t think this is a gender-based joke at all. Arlo was nearly falling asleep, but surprised himself when he cut the trimmer’s cord. Seeing it as some sort of near-death experience, he’s in a bit of a state of shock and reassures his wife that he’ll be okay. Janice, of course, saw the whole thing coming.
