Judy Kao: What is that stuff coming out of the baby? Or is it the toy that is spewing?

  1. That’s the baby’s arm, fiddling with the bird. Not sure what the point of this strip is, though.

  2. Panel 1 – Baby in bad mood
Panel 2 – Baby still in bad mood
Panel 3 – Baby plays with toy
Panel 4 – Toy makes music, baby is happy.

file this one under “I get it, but it’s not amusing, interesting, or funny.”

  3. Hm, I read it as if it is the toy that is in the bad mood in the first two panels (either as the baby thinks, or in “reality”). Then the baby makes the toy happy, as is evident from the music.

I think it has at least some cuteish funniness to it that way.

  4. You know those singing birds that people put in potted plant so that they get reminded about when to water the plant? Same thing here- the baby soils its diaper, the aroma rises to the bird, which sings to alert that parent that someone is stinky.

  5. I took the black marks in the first two panels to be the sound of the music winding down. The baby waits for it to stop completely before swatting it to start again.

  6. “Panel 3 – Baby plays with toy”

Baby has a freakishly long left arm in comparison to his right. He seems to have rather advanced gross motor control, to boot.

  7. I get it. It’s not supposed to be amusing or funny. If it were, they wouldn’t have made panel 3 so hard to understand.
