Second City Kong

  1. He thinks they’re attacking him for bagging NY instead of hijacking the dame?

  2. This IS New York we’re talking about; few things move a NYer to violence faster than telling him his city isn’t number one in the whole wide world. Well, maybe not actual violence; but there is a real pride in their city going on over there.

  3. Agreed. Note also that Kong is climbing the Chrysler Building – a much more stylish skyscraper than the ESB. Clearly an ape of taste.

Perhaps, however, the title ought to have been Third City Kong, Los Angeles having surpassed Chicago in population some decades ago. . . .

[Disclaimer: I grew up in LA. On the other hand I’m a great fan of both NYC and Chicago, and visit the latter regularly.]

  4. Mark, any Chicagoan (and, evidently, I) will quickly point out that “Second City” doesn’t refer to being 2nd to New York or LA or any other place in the world. Rather, it refers to Chicago in its current state, rebuilt from the first version which was destroyed in the great fire of 1871. Sure, it’s a load of baloney, but that’s their story and they’re sticking to it.

  5. It’s a lot better than “Windy City” that has nothing to do with weather.

  6. Rasheed, I’m not sure if you meant it as a joke or not, but in reality the nickname “Windy City” may have nothing to do with the weather. Check out:,_Origin_of_Name_(Chicago)

  7. Ok, not a NYer, so I’m sorry, I don’t know the ESB from the CB. But having had that pointed out to me, I think I get it. That isn’t Faye Wray (or whatever her character’s name was), that’s his new girlfriend, and he’s explaining why his last relationship ended. And of course you don’t take your new girlfriend to where you took your old girlfriend, hence the different building. That’s what it looks like to me, anyway.
