Story Problems

What exactly is Frazz’s point here? And for the record, Caulfield’s math is correct.


  1. I think Frazz’s point is:

    If 1.25x = x, then what is x?

    1.25x = x
    1.25x – x = x – x
    0.25x = 0
    x = 0

  2. Caulfield’s working about 75% as hard as he should now, so working 25% harder puts him where he should already be?

  3. okay, that math should’ve been 80% and 20% (right?) I was an English major. I don’t do story problems either, apparently…

  4. James is right, Caulfield (the kid?) apparently isn’t putting in any effort while he’s in school anyway.

    Until last week I worked 4.5-day weeks. To get 40 hours, I’d work 9 hours Monday thru Thursday, 4 hours Friday morning, and have Friday off. To do this, I’d have to physically spend an extra hour at work during the week to make up the missed Friday hours. Instead of spending more time at school, Caulfield merely says he’ll just put more effort into learning somehow.

  6. I get Frazz’s point, but he’s missing Caufield’s to make a joke.

    The actual math would be (1.25x * 4) = (1.00x * 5), not (1.25x) = (1.00x)

    The first obviously works for any value of x, which would prevent him from making the x=0 joke, but it completely misses Caufield’s point.

  7. Frazz is under the bizarre impression that elementary school students can be expected to give 100% effort at all times. Maybe in some families in Japan, but not in any US school I’ve seen.

  8. Frazz totally DOES get what Cauflied is saying “I’ll work harder to get more done, sooner”, and his reply could just as easily have been “you could work two times as hard, but 2 times nothing is still nothing”.
    But he’s being nicer, funnier, and trying to make Caulfield think.

  10. Frazz’s point is “well, fuck, it all looks exactly the same to me! Why bother messing with the status quo?”

    This is one of those times that Frazz really annoys me. I wish that its ratio of super-insightful-or-at-least-funny to stupidly-preachy was higher than it is. But however much I love Frazz in general, this is one of those not-so-much strips for me.

    I suppose that it could be one of those strips that shows Frazz as being less-than-perfect, so I can cheerfully award a No-Prize to the person who convinces me of that, at least.

  11. The first time I read it, I thought Frazz meant that if Caufield could work 25% harder then he should be working that hard anyway, but the way it’s phrased he’s obviously saying that Caufield does nothing.

    I prefer my original interpretation.
