  1. Is there meant to be a comic here?

  2. I shouldn’t be amazed anymore by people’s capacity for stupidity, but I can’t help myself.

The McD employees either accepted an anonymous caller’s word that he was a police officer or pretended there was an anonymous caller and thought that would be good enough.

  3. And this was part of the basis for the lawsuit: Though you wouldn’t think this would be necessary, McDonalds (and Burger King and Wendy’s) should inform their managers, as a matter of course, that they should never strip-search an employee on the orders of an anonymous phone caller who claims to be a police officer.

I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, McDonalds has a responsibility to its employees to provide a safe work environment, and since this had already happened a bunch of times in the past, it was a known danger they should have warned their employees about. On the other hand, WTF? Should McDonalds also inform its employees that they should never jab themselves in the eye with a carving knife, just because an anonymous phone caller who claims to be a doctor says that it’s absolutely necessary?

  4. The difference, I think, is that if they jabbed themselves in the eye with a carving knife, they clearly wouldn’t be doing so in their capacity of McDonald’s Assistant Manager, and therefor McDonald’s wouldn’t be liable.

And of course you might be much more inclined to “believe” somebody ordering you to strip-search a young female employee than somebody ordering you to jab yourself in the eye with a carving knife.

Clearly, not. But thank you for playing.

  6. I just read a little more about this, and I read that the manager was awarded $1.1 million. Huh? Can anyone explain that to me? I mean, OK, that will probably be reversed on appeal, but still. . .

  7. My guess would be that the manager blames McDonald’s for all the stress this incident has put her under, since they never warned her to be wary of this scam.

  8. It wasn’t as clear to me that there wasn’t supposed to be a comic, because there was no link when I posted, either.
