When a Woman’s Reach Exceeds Our Grasp

Carl Fink: A muscular woman in a corset reaches into a Renaissance helmet? What?

Several people sent me this one on Friday, accompanied by comments almost word-for-word the same as Carl’s .

  1. I’m guessing it’s a statement on trendy purses (there’s chain that loops around the woman’s shoulder). Perhaps how a lot of purses nowadays look like they’re supposed to be something else, and in Renaissance Times it would have looked like a helmet?

  2. Muscular? Just how skinny are the women you know in RL, Bill?

    Comment by Keera — October 22, 2007 @ 1:20 am

  3. Definitely a trendy purse. Actually not a bad gag!

  4. Take it up with Carl, Keera

  5. So a trendy purse joke requires going BACK in time and implies that trendy purses are your husband’s hats?

    Comment by Carl — October 22, 2007 @ 7:26 am

  6. Forget the helmet – why does she have a tuft of hair peeking from her decolletage?

  7. That’s not a tuft of hair. I think that’s supposed to be cleavage.

And she does look kind of muscular to me, the way she’s drawn, although that could be just the puffy sleeves.

  8. Her hair and clothing would put her in about 1780. Jousting helmets are generally associated with the time around 1480.

I suppose asking for accuracy is too much.

  9. #8 — That’s because it’s a retro purse. 😉

  10. There’s something about the image – probably the arms and their posing – that reminds me of Rosie the Riveter, particularly Norman Rockwell’s version. Perhaps the helmet is her lunchpail?

  11. Sorry, Bill. I noticed a little too late who was hanging out with the skinny chicks.

    Oh, Carl…!

  12. “why does she have a tuft of hair peeking from her decolletage?”

    Nair hadn’t been invented.
