  1. I’m getting the idea that it will be good for sales, since people will need to buy a new map to be up to date.

  2. Looks simple enough: every time the borders change, people have to buy a new set of maps from them. Score!

  3. Albania! Albania!
    You border on the Adriatic!
    Your terrain is moun-tain-ous,
and your chief export is chrome!

  4. I’m assuming Brien’s comment is from either Monty Python or Saturday Night Live, or some other pop culture tableau I’m in the wrong generation to get. Anyway, I think the map guys are so happy because, in addition to the new sales, Albania’s split is an easy upgrade: just draw a line straight down the middle. Done!

  5. #3 is from Cheers, believe it or not. Don’t remember why, but Coach sang that…

  6. … except Albania isn’t shaped like that.

  7. This keeps them employed

  8. Hell, I’d be high-fiving if Albania split, if only because it’d mean the current dictatorship would have to fall for that to happen. But, of course, that’s not the intended punchline.

Frankly, though, as others have noted, Albania doesn’t look like that. I wouldn’t buy maps from those people….

  9. Re #3, 4, and 5. Coach learned geography by making up song lyrics about the countries, and he tutored Sam by teaching him the songs. The “Albania Song” is sung to the tune of “When the Saints go Marching in”. I can’t help but sing it whenever I hear Albania mentioned.

  10. Amazing, isn’t it, that it apparently takes two writers to get the location of Albania wrong.

Until now, I had always thought Coach was saying the chief export was “coal”. I glad I am beyond school age. I would have missed that question on a social studies test, as my sole knowledge of Albania comes from this song.

  12. Am I the only one who thought that the map makers made Albania split in two, i.e. they mess around with the maps, and stuff happens in real life to reflect it? (It would explain some of the less understandable conflicts on our planet…)
