Comic Book References I Don’t Understand

Yes, I understand that Dan Didio is not beloved among many DC Comics fans;
but what specifically is this panel referring to?

  1. There was a 4th Robin: Stephanie Brown. During Dan Didio’s DC Comic reign, she, the only official Girl Robin, was killed off. Dan Didio’s gained a reputation for doing incredibly sordid storylines (which he claims are “realistic”) such as the beloved wife of the Elongated Man getting raped and killed by one of the supervillains.

  2. Okay, I was thinking of Spoiler: but if anything I’d associate this sort of garbage with Frank Miller who, while not the writer who actually had a superhero’s dead girlfriend stuffed into a refrigerator, is probably most associated with the superhero’s-dead-girlfriend-stuffed-into-a-refrigerator school of comic book writing.

    And I know David Willis is no Frank Miller fan (per this classic Shortpacked strip).

    I’m sure you’re right, but it’s just not a connection I naturally made, since I associate Didio with quite a number of other literary offenses. I guess the gag just didn’t work for me, is all.

    Just for the record, while Sue was raped by the villainous Dr. Light, she was actually killed by Ray Palmer’s insane ex-wife.

  3. Dave Willis also mentions Spoiler (“Girl Robin”) in a Shortpacked! strip, too. (Here.)

  5. Oy, this comic has caused me to learn waaaaay more about Batman lore than I EVER wanted to know! The whole Spoiler story line is such a soap opera… pregnancy and all… do the people who read serial comics on a regular basis like the soapy parts, skip them, or just tolerate them?
