Should I know who she is? Am I better off not knowing? And the joke is…?

  1. I’m not great with celebrity faces, names, what have you. I have no idea who it is either. I’m just wondering what newsstand carries 1,000 copies of anything, let alone who can afford that. What is it, $3 per magazine? That would be $3,000 that he carries around in his pocket. And why would he need more than one copy anyway!? I think the use of hyperbole is just throwing me off and is best ignored in this case.

  2. Maxim recently published a list of the 5 Unsexiest Women. The pic is their #1 choice, Sarah Jessica Parker.

  3. He’s trying to reward “honest journalism” with his wallet by buying a lot of the magazine. I just don’t get the post-it notes reference in the last panel. And is that SJP, or Dee Snyder from Twisted Sister?

  4. What I don’t get is why he thinks viciously insulting a woman for her facial features is somehow worth rewarding. It’s exceedingly creepy and jackass-like.

  5. I remember reading online how they chose Sarah Jessica Parker. And i think Julia Roberts was on the list, but I don’t remember the others. I, too, do not get the post-it note bit in the last panel. Nor do I think it’s “honest journalism” to insult women that way. But Maxim does nothing but objectify women anyway, so it’s no more honest than any supermarket tabloid.

  6. There’s no way those five are the unsexiest they could find. There are less sexy women in my own family.

  7. there’s no exact problem with SJP being unsexy. the problem is, that in 100+ episodes of Sex and the city all the other rather good-looking people acted (you know, like in “scripted” and in “actor”) like horse-faces are the most arousing possible female feature straight after, say, JLo’s butt.

which of course made other “unsexy” women feel better through being lied to by proxy, and made this boring show the hit it became.

So Maxim and our hero Rayne aren’t more exaggerating than those media types who made SJP “sexy”.

  8. I’m not a fan of Sex and the City, but I always thought it was cool that someone as unconventionally attractive as SJP become a sex symbol because of that show. Looks like it was just a fluke, and I’m reminded that women who don’t conform to an ideal of beauty (Sandra Oh and Amy Winehouse also made the list, as did Britney Spears, which is such BS, as Maxim and friends were falling all over themselves to get bikini photos of her and her ilk five years ago) are not just ugly, but also unsexy.

Thanks for putting me in my place, Maxim.

  9. Tell Matthew Broderick his wife isn’t sexy, see how that goes over.

  10. OK, so we’ve established that this is about Sarah Jane Parker and her being at the top of Maxim’s List.

    So far so good.

And we figured out that buying a thousand copies was meant as an economic reward for Maxim.

    So far so good.

But – what’s the fool Post-It in the 4th panel for? Could it be that the “punchline” in the 3rd panel was written on the post-it? Was that so out-of-character that it couldn’t be spontaneous?

    I don’t follow this comic so I wouldn’t know..

  11. The whole joke of the strip is for years and years, Sarah Jessica Parker was getting major props in Hollywood through her series Sex and the City, and was considered one of the city’s sexiest women. But no one actually thought she was sexy. Anybody will tell you the crone is a big hag. Fianlly, Maxim made her the least sexy woman on the planet and everyone who thought she was overrated was like, “Finally!”
Rayne, the character of the strip, has always been shallow, but everyone to an extent in shallow. It’s also a long-running, though not oft-mentioned, joke in the strip that Rayne thinks SJP looks like a horse. So Rayne is happy people finally realize SJP isn’t at all good looking. It’s also a commentary on today’s media. If SJP making #1 Unsexiest Woman is the only honest piece of journalism around, what does that say for the rest of the news around?
