Okay, I get that it’s Veteran’s Day. Is the point here that Max is supposed to let the military personnel go to the front of the line? Because seriously, I don’t think there are very members of our armed forces who would use their service status to cut in front of a 2-year-old in an ice cream line.

Dunno. They kinda look like they’re trying not to be recognized while they’re in the queue. Is it because they all think it would damage their “tough” image if they were recognized queueing up for ice cream?

Yeah, they’re lined up in service order, so it appears that the young man and the kid in the front of the line are being asked who’ll be next to serve, rather than to be served.
Why ice cream, I have no idea.

My dad would so do that – use his uniform as a reason to go to the front of the line.
After he left the military, he got a job as a cop, so he still has a uniform. And still does.
He mostly wears it off-duty to look impressive – especially if he has to do anything with my mom. (Divorced since ’99)

I like Dawn’s explanation, even if it is a bit unsettling.
Reminds me of a classic Steve Canyon strip, published just as the Korean War was beginning: Steve is in a room where one wall lists names of men and women who died in the Spanish-Americar War, one wall lists men and women who died in World War 1, one wall lists men and women who died in World War 2… and he’s staring sadly at a blank, fourth wall.

My thoughts on meanings…
“Next.”
43 flavors likely refers to American Presidents, many of whom have served up wars that young men (and women) have lined up for.
Finally, as to the “why ice cream?” question…
“I scream.”
Prob’ly not the actual intention, but it fits in well with my perspective.
