Plus ca change…

Filed under: Arlo and Janis, Bill Bickel, calendars, CIDU, comic strips, comics, humor — Cidu Bill @ 12:03 am

Well presumably Arlo is getting oddly defensive here, telling Gene that things have in fact changed: They’ve changed the calendar since Gene left for school.

But if this is the point of the comic, why did they change the calendar between September and November (because Gene is clearly home from college for Thanksgiving weekend) rather than, say, on New Year’s Day?

  1. Assuming the calendar is the type that displays each month on a separate page . . . need I go on?

  2. Maybe this is the author’s subtle way of letting us know that they’re Jews. Jewish New Year was mid-September this year.

Okay, Ooten’s explanation is the more likely one.

  3. And once again, let’s hear it for Bill for his headlines (I’ll admit that I had to Google this one). Plays on words work best when there is a double meaning (versus just a play on the sound of the words) and when I found the meaning of the full phrase (“Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose,”) I had to smile. Nicely done Bill.

  4. When does the Sports Illustrated calendar come out?

  5. I took it that Glen was complimenting them as if they’d done some redecorating & Arlo replies that the calendar is the only thing that’s changed.

Kind of like: Oh, did you get new carpet? Yeah, 2 years ago.

  6. I agree with Michele here. The kid’s back from college for the first time and the place looks so DIFFERENT to him now, but they haven’t changed anything except the calendar.

  7. i agree with michele as well (hey, that rhymed), but i also want to offer another theory… perhaps that home is so outdated that ANY change whatsoever, including changing a calendar or calendar page, would make a noticable difference… i can see it now, a new designing show on TLC where they come in and update your calendar… would be a hit.

  8. or, it could just be that he is homesick and he thinks the place looks great because he missed it, and dad is either being sarcastic about the calendar making a difference, or he actually thinks such a small change would be appreciably noticeable…

  9. I know you can get 16 month calenders that start in September of the current year and go through to Dec of the next year, so maybe they bought one of these. I never did see the point of those calendars though… If you have a calendar you don’t need another that duplicates 4 months of the one you have, and if you made it 8 months of this year without one you probably don’t need one now. But that’s just me being too logical.

  10. There is logic to 16-month calendars: If by the end of the year you already have a handful of events — school functions, doctor appointments, etc — scheduled for the following year, and you don’t want two calendars hanging around, it might make sense to transfer everything over to the new calendar and get rid of the old one.

  11. I stand corrected. I guess that’s what I get for letting my wife handle that side of the family event planning. 🙂
