Okay, while last week’s photo business bordered on the creepy, but could have been interpreted as Les simply trying to embarrass his daughter, Summer’s comment in today’s strip…

I felt as if I needed to wash my hands after reading this one.

  1. That one actually didn’t squick me. I agree about the picture one; he was just trying to embarrass his daughter. For the basketball one, I thought he was just wanting to take an interest in his daughter’s life & I really didn’t get why she was calling him “creepy”.

  2. What made it creepy was Summer calling it creepy.

  3. My sister had a friend next door. I always thought they were good friends. The family (with the two adopted kids) only came to live there in the summers and the brother was my best friend. Anyway, I’d often hear my sister call her friend “you creep!”. I thought it was just the kind of thing that friends would say when one was bugging the other.
Turns out, the neighbor girl was really nasty to my sister (as, we later learned, her adopted parents were to her).
So, I am now unsure whether “creep” or “creepy” can be used with friends. (However, I still believe a friend with some bond is better than no friend at all.)

Perhaps, this is what is leading to the therapist’s office visit that kicked off this new era with flashbacks.
If not, could it be that a little counseling of some sort is in order? In his love for his daughter, some empathetic perspective seems to be missing. Has this hole been growing since the death of his wife 10 years ago?
It seems there will be no rest for the FW reader this year.

  4. I think you’re making too much of this. I think Les is just taking an interest in his daughter’s life, and she’s calling him creepy to embarrass him, in retaliation for his embarrassing her in front of the photographer. The implication is that other people will think he’s just a creepy middle-aged man watching the hot teen-age girls practicing basketball.

  5. “a creepy middle-aged man” who as far as we know hasn’t been with a woman in ten years…

  6. I think Summer knows what many people (but apparantly not CIDU’s commenters) make of a lone adult man watching a girl team practice.

  7. This isn’t a particularly funny strip at all. Maybe if it were a Monday strip, setting up a week of Summer-plays-basketball jokes, I’d be cool with it. But as a stand-alone Sunday strip, this is pretty weak.

  8. #6: except that people at the school know that Les is a teacher there, so he’s not just some stranger.

  9. I think it’s the goatee. Goatees are creepy. I mean, just look at that disembodied head in the title panel.
