Okay, maybe I’m missing something — it’s been known to happen — but wouldn’t his reaction have made more sense if her safety seal had already been popped?

(If you can’t see part of this comic, click it)

  1. It was already popped…thus the “pop” sound when he pressed on her head

  2. IOW, he didn’t know she’d be “violated” before the lid came off, and has therefore misunderstood her “condition”. Peanuts for brains will do that.

  3. I agree with Bill on this one — something doesn’t seem quite right. If the seal has already been broken, there shouldn’t be any pop. The evidence should be visual, not aural.

  4. He takes her veil off and presses the button on the lid. It pops indicating that it has been opened before. Fairly straightforward.

  5. Yeah, note that he’s pushing on her lid, not making any sort of twisting-off motion.

  6. This kind of safty seals work by the jar being vacuum sealed with a metal lid that wants to be in “button up” position, but it vacuumed down. Once the vacuum has been broken (jar opened), the button-metal-lid is now up and “pops” when he pushes down on it.

Would have been funnier with an ice cream sundae and a jar of cherries… Get it? Get it?

  7. Yeah, I’m agreeing with Bill here. He’s not “pressing down” on her button, he’s just flipping off her veil. It’s a really cute idea for a comic, I love the *intent*, but either the artist doesn’t actually understand how those lids work or we’re missing something.

  8. Heather, it looks to me like he is “pressing down” on her button in the top half of the second panel.

  9. He’s accidentally (or maybe “accidentally”) pressing the button as he lifts the veil and his hand brushes over it. I read this comic regularly, and you aren’t the only one that was confused by this one, Bill. He made a news post shortly after it was published explaining it to people who didn’t get it.

  10. I think the bigger issue here is violence towards jam jars; as it seems he has already struck her for mixing it up before their wedding. Is this the sort of abusive relationship we want to see in our lunch pails?

  11. I wish my jam jars were built like that…mum, just sayin.
