Well, at least he’s not wearing a cheerleader skirt…

I really do believe that Tom Batiuk is leading up to Les being not just embarrassingly eccentric, but mentally ill — ever since, in fact, that bizarre adventure in Manhattan “ten years ago.”

Which of course will make these strips a lot less amusing in hindsight, the same way all those jokes about Ronald Reagan’s memory and attention span lapses were funny until it turned out he had Alzheimer’s.

  1. Oh sure, Les, play the mom card in order to get your daughter off your case for creepily stalking her. I mean, I have an overprotective dad, and even though I’m 20 years old he freaks at the thought of me going on a date, but he would never be this weird.

  2. Well, the snow angel one seems very eccentric, but he was successful in keeping his daughter’s sanctity intact. It does go overboard, though. He did all that to avoid her even getting a goodnight kiss!

As for the first one, unless it’s a family tradition or a popular song or rhyme, it seems rather random. I can certainly see a mental illness as a possibility.

  3. Come to think of it, was Les making thes snow angels for the past nine years, or was his complete psychotic break only a recent thing?

  4. Are you hinting that you think the entire 10-year jump is some kind of delusion on Les’s part?

Well, that would certainly explain all of the vague, “It’s ten years from now, but not really; it’ll all become clear later,” and “We’ll learn the truth about Wally eventually” stuff has been about.
