  1. I believe at first the blonde one (forgot her name) is at first saying that she would stand out in the crowd and attract the wrong kind of attention. Once she realizes that Maeve is actually going somewhere where everyone is going to be wearing the same and somewhere much nicer than where she will be, she holds the same stance, but this time out of jealousy. That’s my interpretation, which I’m not entirely sure of. I’d like to hear some other ideas.

  2. I don’t get the brunette’s smug smile in the last panel.

Also, the characters in this strip are often drawn to be so frumpy- looking, I was quite shocked at the brunette’s hot body in the bikini.

  3. My take on the smug look is that the teenager knows she has managed to drive an adult crazy. I don’t understand the joke, though.

  4. I don’t think Maeve is a teenager; these two are supposed to be near the same age, in their forties.
I don’t understand Susan’s reaction in Panel Three at all. What does she have to explain again? And what does she have against Maeve wearing the bikini in Hawaii? Her argument in panel two doesn’t hold up for a beach party.

  5. Since she is going to be at a New Year’s Beach Party in
Hawaii, she basically *is* saying, “HEY, LOOK AT ME!

  6. Isn’t Maeve the one who nobody believed was really dating Viggo Mortensen (when she really was)? I thought maybe that Susan believed Maeve is living in her imaginary world again, but it does seem – from the strips from the rest of last week – that she does believe her and is just annoyed that Maeve is “showing off” by going to Hawaii. Way to be a supportive friend, babe! Maeve’s single, has no kids, has a good job, and saves her money – what a beeyatch!

  7. I dunno, I just think there should be more Hawaiian themed beach parties at new years…

  8. I agree with response 1. She starts out saying that the bikini can’t be worn because she’ll stick out, then Susan is just jealous that Maeve gets to go to Hawaii. And Maeve has a smug look because she understands that Susan at this point is just jealous.

  9. Jim M, I’d love to know what 40-something woman can have boobs that perky in a strapless bikini top – without surgery. 😉 Gotta love that artistic license!
