Is this just, you know, “there are strange people at Denny’s at 3am,” or is there something more specific going on here?

  1. This one sure looks like a sight gag and a play off of a popular phrase to me.

Then again, there seems to be a little of “Sure, your job is life threatening and daunting, but I really died up there today!” going on here. Both of them have undesirable jobs that they are enamored with, but one really does have a reason to be slumped over at the bar.

  2. No, I think it’s the “there’s weird people at IHOP at 3am”, and that certainly is true.

I was one of them once. And the wait staff laughed at me, which was amusing considering the mix of people in there at the time, but then I got laughing, too. It was a lot of fun, but too weird for most people.

  3. Waffles?

Depressed about job/life does not equal 3 AM waffles to me.

Though I guess the bright lights at 24 hour diners make the people there a bit odder than those at your typical bar.

    Like ventriloquists.

  4. Ah yes, the eternal nemesis of the CIDU pages: Surreality.

Explanation? Would only ruin the joke…

Interestingly, I’ve never seen a “Zippy the Pinhead” on the CIDU – I guess the trick is to make it clear that we have understood the comic exactly then when we realize that we are not going to understand the comic…

  5. I submitted this one in bafflement, and at first I thought it was the usual “You think you got it bad…”, then the comment about Ted and Ted himself (what exactly is Ted doing?) made me think there was something else going on.

It could simply be that the cartoonist should have stopped at the ventriloquist and the diver and saved Ted for another joke.

But that makes me wonder why Ted’s included.

AAARGH! I’ve gotta go do something else.

  6. It’s just the idea of weirdness at late-night diners taken to an absurd extreme.

  7. D’oh! I thought Ted was the deep sea diver at 4 in the morning.

Completely missed the normalish guy at the door.

I wasn’t thinking of IHOP, more along the lines of Waffle House – they have a counter, and IHOP seems to pricey to me for late night hunger.
